About White Mountains
The White Mountains are part of the northern Appalachian Mountains and run through a quarter of the state of New Hampshire and a portion of western Maine. They are known for their rugged terrain and bad weather. They are most famous for Mount Washington, which is the tallest peak in the Northeast and holds the record for the fastest surface wind gusts in the world of 231 miles per hour.
The White Mountains include the Franconia Range, Sandwich Range, Carter-Moriah Range, Kinsman Range, and the Mahoosuc Range. There are 48 peaks in New Hampshire and one in Maine that are over 4,000 feet in elevation, known as the four-thousand footers or 4ks.
The mountains are called “white” for two reasons. The highest peaks appeared white because they were often covered in snow and the mica-laden granite on the summits looked white.
